Guided tuition day on the Wye Fish on a dry fly Monsal Dale in spring

Fly Fishing Instruction

Looking for fly fishing tuition when you visit Peak District National Park or are you in need of some fly casting tuition while you are here. With Peak District Fly Fishing I offer a range of options for fly fishing instruction to suit every need, from the total beginner through to the experienced angler who wishes to add yet another skill to his existing armoury.

One to one fly fishing instruction can be arranged by the hour, half day or full day and, if you are looking for a course for more than one day, I can arrange a multi venue package.

Fly fishing instruction knows no boundaries and all are welcome but, because of the terrain, not all venues are suitable for people with mobility problems.  However, there are areas on river, lakes and in boats where even wheelchair access is readily available.  Just let me know the difficulty and I will make the necessary arrangements.

Fly Fishing Tuition -Trout Stream

A typical trout stream fly fishing tuition day will start with a walk along the bank to look at the water and the best lies for feeding fish. The hatches of fly and the insects along the bank will be pointed out and a plan of action mapped out for the conditions of the day.   Casting tuition from a qualified Casting Instructor will form the early part of the day and suitable fishing tackle will be provided if necessary. Once the fly can be cast you will be taken on to the river and shown how to approach the fish, using the ground cover to stalk the fish and then to present the fly in an appropriate manner, be it dry fly, nymph or traditional wet fly.  An ongoing feature of the day will be the interpretation of the changes in conditions and fly hatches as and when they happen and you will be given an understanding of the way the fish are reacting to these changes.   Your guide/instructor will carry a full range of suitable flies, fishing tackle and plenty of enthusiasm to make your day as successful as possible.

Fly Fishing Tuition -Small Lake

Much of the day will be along the same lines as the trout stream fishing tuition day but with the added inclusion of an introduction to sinking lines and where, when and how to use them according to the size of the water being fished.   You will be shown how to stalk fish in clear water as well as the basic entomology of the fly life found in and around the lake that the trout will be feeding on.  Suitable fishing tackle and flies will be provided if necessary.

Fly Fishing Tuition - Large Lake

This day includes all of the features of the small lake fishing tuition day but has the added experience of boat fishing with all the extras that this entails.   You will be briefed on boat safety, boat handling and how to cast sitting down, an interesting experience for a beginner if the boat is rocking about a bit. The use of sinking lines is particularly important here and their use will be explained and illustrated as and where necessary.

2 Hour ‘Taster’

For total beginners I offer a 2 hour ‘taster’ session that includes an introduction to fly fishing tackle, basic casting techniques, knots and a little about the fish, its environment and its food.   Because of the safety elements inherent in fly fishing, this particular session does not include an actual fishing element but it has proved to be very popular.   This package is a very popular Gift Voucher item but is restricted in venue.

Half Day Fly Fishing Instruction

The half day fly fishing tuition is an extension of this ‘taster’. There will be time for more in-depth casting tuition as well as the addition of some fishing towards the end of the session.   Again this is suitable for complete beginners and is a particularly good way to start off as a fly fisherman.  These packages can be arranged on river, pond or large lake.

Full Day Fly Fishing Instruction

The full day course gives yet more time to expand on the casting element, knots and simple entomology before enjoying the rest of the day fishing and putting your new found skills into practice. Throughout the day I will be there to offer advice, point out the changes in conditions, explain the behaviour of both the fish and the fly life, thus helping you to develop your skills. This package can also be arranged on river, pond or larger lake.
