Fly Casting Tuition

Fly Casting Tuition can be arranged at all levels on an hourly basis or for both full and half days if required and can be on a one2one basis or for a group. As a fully qualified APGAI instructor I can teach from first principles or help you to tune up on specific, more advanced techniques as required. From total beginners to fully experienced fly fishermen, all can  benefit from casting tuition.   Whether from a basic introduction to fly fishing tackle and how to use it right through to honing a special, advanced technique, all levels of ability can be catered for.

I offer fly casting tuition for both single and double handed fly rods as well as the use of both fixed spool and multiplier reels for spinning and bait casting.

 
Single Handed Fly Rods

The following casts are all taught from first principles:
  • The Roll Cast plus, if required the Roll Pick-up, the Jump Roll and the hauled (Turbo) Jump Roll
  • The Overhead Cast plus False Casting and Line Shooting
  • The Double Haul plus the individual Single Hauls on back and front casts plus line shooting
  • The Single Spey Cast including the hauled front cast plus line shooting
  • The Double Spey Cast including the hauled front cast plus line shooting
  • The Snake Roll Cast including the hauled front cast plus line shooting
  • The Snap Casts including the hauled front cast plus line shooting
  • Slack Line Presentation Casts including Mends, Reaches, Parachutes and Curves

All Instruction will include elements on the importance and dangers of different wind directions with particular reference to the Spey Casts where this element is the major deciding factor in the choice of the appropriate cast.

 
Double Handed Fly Rods

The following casts are taught from first principles:

  • The Roll Cast plus the Roll Pick-up and the Jump Roll
  • The Overhead Cast plus False Casting and Line Shooting
  • The Single Spey Cast
  • The Double Spey Cast
  • The Snake Roll
  • The Snap Casts
  • The Underhand Style of Casting
  • The Skagit Style of Casting
  • Mending line both on the water and in the air

All Instruction will include elements on the importance and dangers of different wind directions with particular reference to the Spey Casts where this element is the major deciding factor in the choice of the appropriate cast.   They will also consider the value of a Wading Staff and Life Saver Collars

 
Spinning and Bait Casting

The Fixed Spool Reel

The following casts are taught from first principles using both single and double handed rods:

  • The Overhead Cast
  • The Side Cast - forehand and backhand
  • The Underhand Cast

All Instruction will include elements on the drag systems used in the various types of fixed spool reels. An introduction to the various artificial bait styles used in spinning and bait casting, the knots used to secure them and the terminal tackles needed to ensure their safe and effective use is part of the course.

 
The Multiplier Reel

The following casts are taught from first principles using both single and double handed rods:

  • The Overhead Cast
  • The Side Cast - forehand and backhand
  • The Underhand Cast

All instruction will include elements on the dual drag system present on most multipliers.  An introduction to the various artificial bait styles used.
